Choose a day during the main visitor season when the fort and your selected restaurant are open. The fort is currently between seasons; outdoor stops can be adapted after checking conditions.
Seasonal plan: Fort Mackinac and Seabiscuit Café are closed between seasons. Confirm opening dates and your horse taxi before planning the full outing.
Suggested time on the ground includes a planning allowance for transfers. Driving times, bookings and availability are not live. Use current aviation sources for your flight.
01
Meet your island ride
Arrange an airport pickup and return with horse-taxi dispatch before departure. Check aircraft parking and the absence of on-island fuel as part of your flight planning.
02
Choose history or a scenic start
Visit Fort Mackinac when open, or make Arch Rock your principal outdoor stop. The fort is closed for the 2026 season; its announced 2027 reopening is April 30.
03
Find a table downtown
Choose Mustang Lounge for a casual lunch, or seasonal Seabiscuit Café when its kitchen is operating. These are downtown itinerary stops, not short airport walks.
04
Leave room for the way back
If conditions and energy allow, add the other attraction. Meet your arranged horse taxi for the return to KMCD; completing both attractions is optional.
MAKE THE MOST OF THE STOP
Two things worth seeing
STOP 1 · OPTIONAL
Fort Mackinac
Explore the island’s historic fort and exhibits above the harbor when the seasonal site is open.
Allow: 90–120 minutes; editorial suggestion
Hours: Closed for the 2026 season. Published 2027 schedule: Apr 30–May 2, 9:30 am–4 pm; May 3–Jun 4, 9 am–5 pm; Jun 5–Sep 5, 9:30 am–7 pm; Sep 6–Oct 10, 9:30 am–5 pm; Oct 11–23, 9:30 am–4 pm. Last admission is one hour before closing.
Admission: Published 2027 admission: adult $18; child age 5–12 $10.75. Confirm the rate for your visit date.
The north entrance is the more accessible approach. The south entrance has 27 steps; a lift-equipped horse taxi may be available by prior arrangement.
STOP 2 · OPTIONAL
Arch Rock & Milliken Nature Center
See the limestone arch above Lake Huron; the adjacent nature center interprets the island’s geology.
Allow: 60–90 minutes plus transfer time; editorial suggestion
Hours: The state park is open year-round; outdoor access depends on conditions. The nature-center page lists 9 am–6 pm without clear seasonal dates—confirm before relying on indoor access.
The shoreline approach has 207 steps. An inland route reaches the plaza without that staircase, but gradients and surfaces still need consideration. Choose a route suited to the group.
